DWI Penalties in New Jersey

Driving While Intoxicated is a prime target of law enforcement throughout New Jersey.  The State even provides special funding for DWI enforcement in Union County and the municipal police departments within its borders. It may not therefore come as a surprise that approximately 3,000 drinking and driving complaints including DWI, DUI and Refusal to Submit a Breath Sample, were issued in the County of Union last year. The municipalities at the top of the county rankings for DWI arrests are Linden, Union, and Elizabeth.  If you or a loved one... Read More»

Arrested for Car Burglaries in Union County

One of the more  common varieties of burglary is a car break-in. This can be confusing as lay people often equate burglary with home invasion. This is not the case in actuality as the unauthorized entry into any "structure" for purposes of committing a crime suffices. The law considers a car to be a structure for purposes of the burglary statute - N.J.S.A. 2C:18-2. The Union County Prosecutors Office filed formal charges against an uncle of the escapee earlier this week.  The gentleman is charged with conspiracy and aiding an escape. He is being held at... Union County Lawyer Charged with Cocaine Possession & Distribution Too?

One of New Jersey's most prominent defense lawyers, Paul Bergrin, was arrested earlier this year on charges that included conspiring to arrange the murder of key witness of his clients.  A bail reduction motion and request for home detention filed by the ex Union County Prosecutor was later denied by the Federal Judge presiding over the case. Things continued the same course yesterday when members of the US attorneys office informed the Judge that they were looking to file cocaine related charges against Bergrin stemming from approximately 120 pounds of... Roselle Installs Cameras to Prevent Crime

An interesting measure shall be put in place when school starts this year at Roselle public schools.  The District has installed surveillance cameras in the facilites to foster greater safety.  The intention behind the cameras is to combat crime resulting from both students and intruders, as well as react to emergencies that occur at the schools. The surveillance is probably both a blessing and curse. While the cameras will serve legitimate concerns of safety, I also see the cameras as an opportunity for unbridled policing. The scope of "big brother"... Read More»
